FINE ART

Hannibal Hopson is an artist whose paintings, sculptures, and installations redefine symbolic relationships by translating their forms and characters with shapes, light, and color to emphasize the metamorphosis and transmutability of the canvas and objects themselves.

His practice investigates the connection between ‘time’ and ‘space’ as a beacon for creating moments of distant darkness or ensuing illumination producing a present and contemporary psychedelic reality through abstract expressionism. Hannibal flows with the materials, adapting to the current of dreamweaving and truthseeking, emphasizing or minimizing imagination in plain site as the paintings and sculptures he creates redefine the idea of form and function within the light/darkness spectrum. Often displayed unstretched and part of a natural changing environment, Hopson's paintings exist both prior to the structures or institutions that encapsulate them and post discovery of the cultural significance and totemic ideals that society creates imitating itself as art. As a result, Hopson’s intention is to melt (or build) boundaries between what is and what isn’t present or in the moment.
